Slap myself to stay awake, these clouds are getting dark was that thunder that I heard, I wish I was in park it's been several hours now since we last stopped for gas my lead foot's gone soft, there's a pain in my ass thumping on the windshield now the rain is coming down wipers turned up the max, we're far from any town gone from dark to darker, damn these headlights in my mirror Oh, to be back on my couch watching T.V, drinking beer there's trucks passing trucks, and trucks passing cars the rain in pouring down so hard I can't tell where we are they're passing on the left, they're passing on the right gotta do my best to make it home tonight now this sonabitch here seems he don't know how to pass two trucks riding side by side and he won't step on the gas there's a line a cars twenty long waiting restless in the rain for this blame fool to pass that Mack and get in the right lane damn it all, construction zone ahead for the next ten miles tryin' not to lose my mind, I think of puppy dogs and smiles this is 'bout the the worst stretch of driving that I've seen I don't think that I'm better for it, I feel I'm getting mean there's trucks passing trucks, and trucks passing cars the rain in pouring down so hard I can't tell where we are they're passing on the left, they're passing on the right gotta do my best to make it home tonight this twisting grade is slowly rising, there's still a long, long way to go hands on the wheel, don't look over, that river valley's far below here comes Johnny Law now in his souped up SUV lights are blinkin', sirens blarin', hope he ain't coming for me now the cars in front of me have all stepped on their brakes I hear the sound echoing down of the diesels and their jakes grinding to a halt, this freeway's like a parking lot pass around that number now my nerves are almost shot we ain't goin' nowhere soon, I figure, "what the heck?" ambulances screaming by, looks like there's been a wreck there's trucks passing trucks, and trucks passing cars they're blowing' on their horns and their grating on their bars they're passing on the left, they're passing on the right gotta do my best to make it home tonight

I'm going out to the tavern now to dance the night away don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart I'll have myself a good old time, I don't care what you say don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart I might not make it home tonight if I get full of drink but I'll see you when I'll see you and I'll charm you with a wink you know well as I know I've been this way from the start don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart I'll dance with every willing girl and promenade the floor don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart I'll spin 'em round and shake 'em down until my feet are sore don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart I don't know why you love me still, I can't take all the blame so take the good with the bad, it works out all the same I'm gettin' by and gettin' high and hope we never part don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart don't blame me it's my honky tonk heart

Big wheel roll, let it roll down low going back to somewhere in my mind my head is reeling and my heart's in tow heading back for something I can't find clouds in the West and it looks like rain gonna need some shelter on the way I pull my hat down and bare the pain thinking 'bout the words I ought to say this endless season is hanging around I need to smell me something living, green my spirit's lost and needs to be found filling up with bitter, dry and mean do you hear that sound like a distant drum I can hear it beatin' in my brain can't tell the lies from the truth anymore 'bout nuf to drive a man insane so tell me, won't you tell me, baby if I've lost my way tell me, won't you tell me sweet baby if you've got something to say Big wheel roll, let it roll down low going back to somewhere in my mind my head is reeling, my heart's in tow heading back for something I can't find

went upon a mountain, that's when he went hog wild ran across a bobcat that really got him riled took a dive in a swimming hole with a toothpick in his heal gets up every morning and reinvents the wheel here he comes, and there he goes where he stops, no one knows don't know much of nothing, but there's nothing he don't see caught him in the act one time he went upon a spree sometimes on a full moon he seems a normal chum but don't you strike a match because he might be full of rum here he comes, and there he goes where he stops, no one knows step right up and see this real country man can't you see he's doing the best that he can best not get too close, but look him up and down give him what you've got and watch him go to town well some folks think he's clever, while others think he's dumb some say how he's cultured, some say he's a bum he don't mind the gossip, he just turns the other cheek the bad things slide right off him in just about a week here he comes, and there he goes where he stops, no one knows way down in a cave on day he found a silver streak mined million dollars but he loaned it to a geek let his hair grow long then he cut it off to sell every day at supper time you'll hear him ring his bell here he comes, and there he goes where he stops, no one knows step right up and see a real country man can't you see he's doing the best that he can best not get too close, but look him up and down give him what you've got and watch him go to town

well I couldn't stand to see you with another and I knew you were not trying to hurt my pride but when I saw you dancing by and the love that was in your eye I turned my head and something in me died and the bottle knew me, it overthrew me and i kept on drinking even when I was alone your memory hurt me, it didn't desert me it was the, worst broken heart I'd ever known in the morning I was wakened by the crashing of the empties as they fell into the bin of an old recycling truck, and I knew I was out of luck I saw our love as a game I'd never win and the bottle knew me, it overthrew me and I kept on drinking even when I was alone your memory hurt me, it didn't desert me it was the, worst broken heart I'd ever known it was the, worst broken heart I'd ever known

Was in the town of Laredo, I couldn't stay another day I had to go I had no money, I had no booze and every game I played I always seemed to lose Margery she told me, "Dear, there's many things you shouldn't hear. I'll write you when you settle down there'll be no due you need to pay, far, far away I hit the road in the rain my engine pumping fast and an aching in my brain I heard a tune on the radio it was about a guy that joined the rodeo I passed a town with a water tower and a mill that processed corn flower a dog was barking by an old oak tree and I lived another day, far, far away I needed sleep, I'd traveled far pulling in a rest stop I slept inside my car I dreamed I was a bird in the sky I saw every little movement with my eye I landed high upon a tree, I felt for once that I was free I woke up sweating in a parking lot and I knew I had to stay, far, far away

Everyday you go away, I go astray I'm out of mind head and I'm wasting away every time I lose my mind, and think I go blind I'm looking for your face but you're no where to find every smile lasts for a while if it's in style but my face is a frown and I feel like a clown I give you all my money, I give you all my time you lock me out in the cold now, baby, without no reason or rhyme Everyday you go away, I go astray I'm out of mind head and I'm wasting away every line line drawn in the sand will have to be banned you're breaking all the rules and slapping my hand and every fire that burns so bright will have to go out I'm left here alone, nop one to hear me shout I give you all my money, I give you all my time you lock me out in the cold now, baby, without no reason or rhyme Everyday you go away, I go astray I'm out of mind head and I'm wasting away
